Eliminating sections

Last week I decided I was going to develop my paintings and bring in darker colours as well as the neon ones. This is because I wanted to get more of the dark backgrounds that were on my original visual research pictures so I simply stuck the masking tape down and painted over again. I really like these images as I feel they really show that the light was in movement and not still and they also brought in new colours that aren't neon so I could include the backgrounds in my prints.

Another thing I think really works with these is that the white where the tape has been is really clean white and this helps show what I was trying to do with these images which is making patterns in a background like the light did on my photographs. These paintings are development for my self initiated brief which in the end will be a collection of mens t-shirts for the higher end of the market e.g. Ted Baker, Diesel, Hugo Boss.

I also want to look at women's wear staying with t-shirts but putting the same print on them, the market would be in the same area e.g. Ted Baker, Vivienne Westwood.

Next week I plan on doing some tie dye samples, I want to do this because I saw some on pintrest and it reminded me one these paintings how it gets the white sections and all different colours so I hope to do those and bring them into my project.

Missing Pieces

As I said in my last post, I planned on doing missing sections in my paintings this week. I decided to base the first pieces on the moving light images and match the same ket features the photographs have.  Firstly I decided this was going to be a very bright painting so I set about using neon yellow and pink acrylic paint I then put masking tape down in patterns trying to match the patterns from the moving light photographs also.

I wanted the colour to flow in the same way that the lights did so I experimented doing this by watering down the paint and pouring it into half blown up balloons. When the paint was in there I then threw the balloons at the paper expecting it to explode but it didn't because it wasn't blown up enough and instead bounced. So I decided to pierce the balloon at the bottom  and it started to just pour out however it didn't look how I imagined it would so I then started to squeeze the balloon and it made a splattered patten which I was very pleased with.

As well as the brightness of the paint and the pattern I have created I also think the missing sections make it a lot more interesting and I really want to carry on doing this in next weeks work.

As I am so happy with the splattered paintings I have decided I am going to carry on the missing section aspect of it and keep the bright colours but maybe introduce some dark colours as well.

Drawing

This week I have been working towards building up my visual research by drawing from my photographs from my first two weeks. I wanted to vary my drawings from simple to more detailed, using different media and different sizes. I have decided to use ink and just a pencil to draw with in these pictures and keep the colour palette simple with just black ink and white paper. I have used the ink as if it is watercolour paint and applied it with a lot and a little of water to control the tones of grey with the black.

As I did a few of these I chose to show 4 of the best images. I really like the tonal values in these pictures, I spent a bit more time doing these ones and I feel they have been successful. The reasons I feel they are successful for my project is because I like the darkness  of the buildings against the white paper, I also like the use of line on them.

The images below are some more of the drawings I have done this week. These are quite detailed pencil sketches and done to scale. This drawing has a wide variety of soft and hard strokes of the lead to show the tonal values on the photographs. Seeing these aspects of my drawings I have decided I want to switch it over and mask out sections of a painting so they will have white strips running through.

I got the idea for the white strips from the windows in this drawing, they're very long and white so this will be seen and be linked in with what I am wanting to do next.

Locating - Visual Research Week 2

After looking at my shadow images, I have then looked at movement with light also. As it went dark I was waiting by the bus stop and I have captured these alluring images of artificial lighting. As cars have gone past me I have pressed the button on the camera and moved it slightly, this made these uneven bright patterns.
