Evaluation

When we were briefed at the beginning of this unit I knew I wanted to work towards doing print in fashion, I knew that my summer work inspired me enough to include it in this terms unit as well so interpreting that was very important to me. That has been successful for me as I have kept the structures of the buildings from my pictures but I have also introduced new elements by my ways of painting and introducing floral prints.

I had to make the decision as to where my garments would fit in in the industry, I took into account the cost of how much it would be to produce on mass with the method I wanted to use. As I was using photoshop to digitally print them this would be a lot cheaper than hand printing them if I was to screen print. As I preferred to use photoshop and the designs all in all would be best produced this way on the basis that I had fine lines and photographic prints inside my silhouettes I came to a conclusion and that was that my t-shirts would be more successful in the high street in shops such as River Island or Topman.

My journey through it has not been an easy ride. I have had one or two wobbly moments but I have come out of those and been focused again due to reassurance from my piers and my tutor. Having being ill for three weeks this was a bit of a struggle for me at times but when I was better I caught up with as much as I could and had a tutorial to get me back on track. The past 3 weeks have been a real turning point for me and have been very important, I feel like I have gone at 100mph and I got to a point where it just started to turn into something very alluring and I was finally seeing where I was going. In the next unit I aim to be at this point at a lot earlier stage.

I do feel my work has been a success in many ways also, I have learnt a lot more and feel like I am finding myself and where I would want to be in this industry when I graduate. I really like my t-shirts and the story they have behind them. I would be thrilled to work with floral patterns again as I feel those sketches towards the end were my strongest point so I definitely think that will be involved in the next unit.

As I look back at my project and everything I have achieved or haven't I can see where I went wrong and which parts were really successful. The parts I think I could do better if I were to start all over again would be to explore my paths more, I feel I took risks in some areas but I had my head set on a certain thing and thats where I was going with it.

Presentation Boards

In our weekly meeting we were told that we all need to make boards for when we hand in our work on the 24th for a small presentation, something that someone can look at briefly and know where I have been and gone with my project. So in time for my tutorial on Monday I was putting these boards together to show how I wanted to present my main elements.

The tutorial we had to show our boards went well, it was discussed that I needed to add a few things to them to show the key elements in my project. However I wasn't happy with the final pieces I had chose, I knew I needed eight and had only shown three but the ones I had shown didn't look as good as I hoped they would.

So, I went back to photoshop and started making loads of t-shirts, this time I had taken a picture of my friend wearing a plain white t-shirt so I could photoshop a design straight onto it. I spent three days doing this and produced seventeen more designs which I was a lot happier with, so much so my eight finals will definitely be take out of these ones.

These are some of the designs I did on photoshop. (not my final ones)

With so many to choose from I have been pondering over the final decision for a few days now, I have been looking at them all as a collection and eliminating some then changing my mind and bringing them back into it, this has happened a few times and I have now decided on 8 designs which I feel are the strongest ones.

Floral Patterns

Last week I discussed doing more floral prints to fill in my silhouettes of the buildings, so I have acted on this and proceeded to do some sketches and paintings of flowers. I originally thought of doing floral prints as I saw a shirt my friend had on which had a very dense black and white print spread all over and it was extremely compelling. I have got pictures of flowers from my visual research so I have looked back at those to see what I could do with those.

During this time I have started to look on pinterest for artists who have used floral print on garments, when I searched this I found a garment Stella McCartney had designed with a flowers on. She has used backgrounds and even bees on which I really engaged with but as  from this I decided to just keep my designs as floral patterns.

After I experimented making floral designs I went back to look at different shapes I could make stencils of and layer these for photographs. I made a diamond shape one with different size diamonds descending to the middle. These pictures are some of my best work but I want to save these for another unit.
