Reconstructing the Jacket - Part Two

As discussed on last weeks blog post, I was going to hand stitch in the sample using invisible and black thread and I achieved this successfully below is an image at an angle so the threads can be seen. I really like the gaps between the threads and the originality of it already!

Starting with the back of the jacket gave me some inspiration for the front, therefore I am going to remove both of the first panels from each side of the jacket to create the ‘see through’ look again. As much as I like what I have achieved I want to get two different feels from each side, one being more masculine and one being more feminine.

Deciding that the left is going to take a more masculine approach I want to make sure that I have some links with the back and front so I plan on using the thread again, but I want to also add in something else so I am going to add another filament like object into it to also keep the structure in there as well as this will be lost due to the missing denim. The right will be the more feminine, delicate side, I would like to use lace for this but one with the denim still there making it darker and one panel with the denim cut out.

Above are images of the front of the jacket and what I have achieved this week. It has been a challenge but I have thoroughly enjoyed it.

In this unit I have always had the mind-set of challenging myself so, I want to design and make a pocket for the front of the jacket. I am sure it will not be the best pocket ever made but I hope I surprise myself and gain another skill. If it doesn’t turn out how I hoped it would I will also learn from this and in the future not make the same mistakes.

Reconstructing The Jacket - Part One

After last week’s research and planning I have a solid path that I am going to go down, starting this week I am definitely going to include one of my samples from the first four weeks. Including colour in my work is not one of my strengths and I don’t feel like I have included it anywhere really therefore one of the only things that does have it in is this sample.

To figure out how I want it to be, I have pinned the sample onto the jacket as seen above, not only to see if it will work together but to see how I want to attach it on. I do want to use invisible thread and coloured threads but experimenting with these will help me come to a conclusion. The unpredictable pathway of the thread is something I want to keep on the jacket as this relates to a life on the streets and that somebody can end up anywhere and be untraceable.

The samples above are experiments I have done in my small sketchbook to visually determine if the threads and the embroidered portrait all compliment each other. To be able to achieve adding both I will need to cut around the embroidery sample so both aspects become features of the jacket, I will be positioning the sample in the middle of the gap where the missing panel should be and hand stitching it in and creating the effect seen above.
